Independent Living

Independent living communities or retirement communities offer private apartments, condominiums, or houses specifically designed for seniors, with the opportunity to engage in social activities, pursue hobbies, and participate in community events.

What are Retirement and Independent Living Communities?

Retirement Communities (also known as Independent Living Communities) are communities that provide apartment-style living and support services to seniors who are nearly or totally independent. The level of service often includes housekeeping, 0-3 meals per day in their community dining room, recreational and social activities, outings, and transportation to and from medical appointments. Many retirees who need additional assistance will add on in-home care services from an outside agency for medication management, help with showering, etc.

Apartments in these communities range in size from studios to 2-bedroom + den apartments with one or two bathrooms. The kitchens often includes a 2 burner cooktop or a full range, as well as a refrigerator and sink.

Activities calendars at Retirement and Independent Living Communities are filled with fun activities to interest seniors. They have entertainment such as speakers, musicians, movie nights, games/card groups, book clubs, learning groups, crafts, and cooking. Once or twice a week there are outings to restaurants or local attractions, with all transportation provided – just sign up and go. Between all these activities and the large dining room, socializing at Retirement and Independent Living Communities is easy!

Monthly rates for Retirement/Independent Living Communities start from about $2000-$3500 for a studio or 1 bdrm apartment; rates usually include utilities (except phone), weekly housekeeping, activities, outings, and transportation. Some Independent Living communities also include all meals in their monthly rates; others have meals as an ala carte option. A second person living in the apartment is an additional fee, particularly if meals are included in the monthly rate.
